Assignment 19:

First of all, I think that this class was good and useful. You did a good job. I can say that if you want to change it a bit you should maybe:

1.     Organizing a field trip to a communication agency to see visual communication under practice not just studying the theories.
2.     I think that you should invite more professors and communication professionals like you did with the INHolland university professors.
3.     Organizing creative activities or activities that can develop student’s creativity in class perhaps.

16.A Picture of Morocco:

I choose this picture because it represents the city I love the most in Morocco, Agadir.

15.Signifier 2:

I took this picture because I think this signifier is a normal one and I didn't go deeper for this one but the way I interpret it is different. I don't see it as just a sign that indicates an exit that we will take in case of emergency but I see it also as something people apply in their lives. When they face problems they always take the emergency exit in other words people tend to go for the easy way or run from their problems. When I saw this sign again I related it to myself because I used to run from my problems.

14.Signifier 1

I really believe that this signifier changed the way I see things now not just from this course but since I understood its meaning. Love is what this signifier means and for me love takes many forms, family love, hobby love, friend love etc., and each one is different from the other maybe in its intensity.

13.Branded!:

I think that this boot brand "UGG" is really popular especially here at Al Akhawayn University. You may have noticed that the majority of girls wear them including me so I am branded.

12.Goal:

My first goal would be to get a good and well paid job in my field ‘communication’. This would help me be independent and gather money.

My second goal is to live my life to the fullest, I want to experience new things such as extreme sports, food and change where I live, how I dress and how I think.

My third goal would be to enjoy every moment of my youth while I still can. I want to travel and explore the world. I know I will not have a lot of opportunities to do that but at least I will try to visit all the countries I am curious about.

11.Mission Statement:

I want to change the way I live.

10.Figure/Ground Relationship:

I know my drawing is bad but this picture represent  the Gestalt Principle of Figure/Ground Relationship. we can notice two things in this picture either two faces or a vase. This example is very famous and it is the only one that I could think of and that I could found.

9.Closure:

This photo illustrate an example of the Gestalt principle of Closure we can easily connect the dashes and form a heart.

8.Uniform Connectedness:

This is the best example I could find of uniform connectedness we can see that in a tv remote buttons are grouped and shaped the same when it comes to functions that are related.

7.Proximity:

This image illustrates the Gestalt principle of Proximity. Elements that are close together are perceived to be more related than elements that are far apart. we can group 'Don't' with 'The' and 'Stop' with 'Party'.

6.Backlighting:

I think we can notice that there is some backlighting in this picture and it seperates the egg from the background a litle bit. I tried many times with different light sources but this photo is the best I could do.

Similarity-5

Gestalt Principle: Similarity
The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together. When similarity occurs, an object can be emphasised if it is dissimilar to the others. This is called anomally. this picture is a good example of anomally since we can clearly distinguish the orange from the apples. by that we tend to focus on the things that are dissimilar.

Depth-4:

This drawing illustrates an illusion of depth of distance. As we saw in class the example of railroads is the same as this one. in other words when we draw roads, railroads and building we tend to use the illusion of depth to show the distance. Like the road and buildings in this drawing. Our mind see that the sides of the road will cross in one point. linear perspective is used in this drawing since we can clearly see the horizontal lines that suggest space
There are different ways to create the illusion of depth:
  • linear perspective.
  • overlapping
  • scale and proportion
  • atmospheric perspective
  • location and surface detail.

Point, Line, Plane-3:

I choose this picture because it is really confusing. We actually can’t see if the lines are parallel or not especially when we try to focus on them. If you observe this picture closely you will start to think that the lines are moving and they kind of touch each other. It is one example of an optical illusion.

Color-2

In our daily life we see complementary colors all around us, but we don’t pay attention to this kind of small details. Therefore, I think that this picture represents a real example of complementary colors. Colors that are opposite or face each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors.

For example: red and green. Colors that we find in nature offer a perfect color harmony. In addition when we see red roses we always tend to think about romance, sensuality, passion and lover’s favorite flower.

Lighting-1

I think that we didn’t see this kind of lighting in class, that’s why I picked this picture. As we can notice in this photo we can see only one side of this face we also see shadows. So this kind of lighting is called 'side lighting'. We can’t really tell if it’s a men or a woman’s face. Here the lighting really contributes to the meaning of the picture. It gives the photograph some mystery, drama, darkness and depth. I think that it draws attention. It makes us think and imagine the rest of the picture.
